This activity is only open to D1230 + D2140 Rotary Youth Exchange inbounds and their host families. Maximum 25 participants (first come, first served).
Welcome to Ypres (Ieper), a beautiful city full of traces of the First World War.
We will start our visit in the Flanders Field Museum. Here you will find facts
and figures, objects, stories and emotional moving images about WWI. The
historical story of the First World War is presented from different
perspectives, highlighting the invasion of Belgium, the destruction during the war years, the
post-war period and the remembrance of the war. After your visit, you will be
ready to discover the traces of war in the landscape with its many cemeteries,
monuments and trenches. You will never look at this part of Belgium in the same way
again.
After
the museum it’s time for action! Be prepared for the Urban Hunt interactive teambuilding activity! In small
teams of 4 or 5 inbounds you will discover the city by solving challenges
linked to the city. Collaboration, strategy and thinking outside of the box are
essential to correctly solve the challenges, accompanied by cryptic sound
fragments, historical photos and mysterious instructions.
Please bring your smartphone (and fully charged powerbank) with you! The game
is on!
After dinner we will join the daily Last Post. This impressive World War
I remembrance ceremony started in 1928 and has been held every evening at 8 pm
under the Menin Gate – even during Covid. The Last Post Association has set
itself the goal of keeping this tradition alive forever. Meanwhile, The Last
Post has sounded more than 33,000 times.
